I have always been into the “gym” scene plus I have always had a love for working out, getting healthier and getting stronger.  A friend of mine introduced me to the crossfit style of workouts which she was doing.  We started doing crossfit after our Muy Thai and Kickboxing workouts at the MMA gym we normally attended.  That first crossfit workout was similar to “Annie”, which was full of push-ups and lunges. I hadn’t been that sore in such a long time and it was then that I was instantly addicted!  Just a few months later, I joined a local crossfit box and never looked back.

The great thing about crossfit is you can modify any of the movements to fit anyone based on their abilities and potential.  There are so many progressions, movements and ways to scale….the possibilities are endless.  The community at the box is so great that you will find someone in just about every class that has “been there, done that”, that you can relate to and get advice and encouragement from.

Personally, crossfit has helped me in my day-to-day life by teaching me safe and proper lifting form.  Though I’ve always been pretty strong, I never really knew the mechanics of how to move my body efficiently as opposed to the ol’ “muscle and strain” method.  Crossfit has also given me the ability to keep up with my kids, whether I have to carry them all day at Disneyland because their shoes gave them blisters or I need to run after them to play or get to them quickly to protect them.  On top of all of that, crossfit has increased my self-confidence.  I never ever thought that I would be able to do things such as a Handstand Push-ups, rope climbs, pistols and pull-ups…  As a matter of fact, I still remember not being able to do a pull-up in middle school and the P.E. Teacher said that it was okay because girls don’t really have to try because girls can’t do regular pull-ups.  She said that she would still pass me with a “C”.  Hence, that was the last time I ever attempted to do a regular pull-up again…..up until crossfit!

“Good things DON’T come to those who wait.  Good things come to those who pursue the goals and dreams they believe in…” 

I believe that a crossfit box isn’t a gym.  It’s a family, a group of people who are all so extremely different you would never think they’d be friends; but at the same time, so much alike because they are all “fighters”.

Crossfitters are the ones who come in day after day to get their butts kicked together as a group, the ones who need and want the challenge that crossfit has to offer, the ones who can accept that when they start; they probably aren’t very good at doing any of the movements yet they keep on going and pushing themselves to meet their goals (doing a pull-up, a snatch, etc). Then, once they reach those goals, they move on to another set of goals where even years later they are still doing the same thing – that is what drives them…..and THAT is why crossfit works.  The constantly varied, functional movements that are executed at high speeds and under heavy loads make our bodies stronger that we ever imagined; and many times, push us much further than we ever expected or even wanted to go.

As fighters, when we feel like giving up in the middle of a WOD, we look to those around us, sweating alongside us, and we push harder for them, for our community and to keep others pushing as well.  We start as one and end as one and it gives us a closeness that is hard to put into words.  Crossfit, to me, is a way of life and not a fitness trend.

If you’re new at crossfit or are thinking of trying crossfit out, don’t give up.  Find a friend, be honest with yourself and your Coaches, trust the process and look for and celebrate the small accomplishments along the way!  Set goals, but not too many all at once (definitely my biggest problem) and most of all, focus on your weaknesses.  After consistent work, those weaknesses will most likely become your strengths!

I’ve got two CrossFit kids of my own.  Allison and Beau, the ones who make me strive to be the best that I can be physically, emotionally and mentally.  The ones who are always watching me, whether I’m failing or excelling, the ones I have to impress and be accountable to at the end of each day.  I am thankful for them and thankful that their being into crossfit will build their physicality, health, self-confidence and character.
